Ellie Ricketts, Graphic Design

I'm Ellie, and I'm a graphic designer

Describe your job

I work part-time as a Graphic Designer, and part-time in Fashion Retail, so my days are always pretty varied. I’m able to spend the majority to my time designing, whilst being able to chat with customers about clothes the rest of the time!

What are the most important skills you need to do your job?

InDesign is something I use most days, as I specialise in editorial design. A creative eye and attention to detail are pretty important too!

I left school and...

I went to Southampton to study Fashion Graphics. I went on to intern with names such as Sophia Webster, Sophie Hulme and Harper’s Bazaar. I worked as Art Assistant at Sophie Hulme for just under two years before deciding to go freelance, and since then I have been lucky enough to work with Swarovski, The London College of Style and the Office of Rail and Road to name a few.

I'm most proud of...

I have loved magazines for as long as I can remember, so I get a real sense of achievement each time I publish an issue of my online travel mag, OUTLOOK.

I’ve now published four issues and I love getting other creatives involved. I always receive such positive feedback and it makes it all worth while.

Before I started my career, I wish I knew…

I wish I’d realised earlier that you should just be yourself! In recent years, I have found my niche, my own personal style and I think this really shines through in my work.

A mistake I made which you can avoid repeating is...

Putting too much pressure on myself to be creative.

Sometimes you need to go with the flow until you feel like being creative again. Create what you want to create, not because you feel you have to.

So, what’s next?

I’m working on putting together Issue #5 of OUTLOOK, which I can’t wait to share!
