Jayde-Olivia, UI Design

I'm Jayde-Olivia, and I'm a User Interface designer

Describe your job

In my current role as a User Interface Designer I work with UX Designers, UX Researchers, UX Copywriters, Product Owners, Developers and more to create TV experiences grounded in research and data.

This means that what I design keeps the end user in mind throughout to make sure that they can have the best experience of the product.

UI Design is a visual design role and I consider things like accessibility, imagery, colour, typography and branding.

What are the most important skills you need to do your job?

Technical skills include visual design fundamentals such as visual hierarchy, typography and colour and contrast. Knowledge of how to use design tools and prototyping. Other skills include collaborating and communicating well with others involved in a project, being able to take your own feelings and opinions out of the design and empathise with the people you’re designing for.

I left school and...

I studied Art, Psychology, English and Media at A-Level. I did a 1 year Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media before going on to do a degree in Graphic Design: Visual Communications.

I left uni with a job as a Youth Worker but struggled to get into a design role. I decided to develop some interpersonal skills by working in retail for a year.

After exactly 1 year I quit and got my first design role after 3 months of consistency and hard work. I’ve worked for 5 companies including the one I’m at now and have the chance to work in-house at some well-known brands and at an agency.

I'm most proud of...

My current work is under NDA but my new portfolio will be live soon

Before I started my career, I wish I knew…

Confidence is key.

A mistake I made which you can avoid repeating is...

Knowing it was time to move on to my next challenge but staying in a role that was no longer serving me.

So, what’s next?

Over the next year or 2 I’m focusing on continuing to learn and connect with other creatives while I develop my brand Olly&Franc that I started with a friend last year.

In 3-5 years I have big plans which include starting an agency but don’t want to share too much about that just yet.

I do some calligraphy on my personal Instagram too @jayde_olivia
